End of the week

This week has been wonderful. So far this year I have taken no art classes so my art outlet has been limited to a lined notebook in the middle of class. Spending this much time in the studio around other people doing similar projects has really helped my creativity flow. I have enjoyed being able to work on my project whenever I want. The freedom that we have been given with senior project has really shown me that I will make time to do things even if sometimes I don't want to. I have still gotten up every morning and gone to breakfast with my friends like usual to get an early start of my day. I start early in the mornings so that I can have time in the afternoon. I really enjoy painting more than I thought I did. Originally I was not very excited about this project as much as I wish I had been because painting is not my strongest talent. I think that I'm making a lot of progress on it and the day I started painting I did so much, I wondered if I would even need 55 hours to do it. So far I have put in about 28 hours, which includes building the canvas painting and sketching. I have learned that I really need to trust the process of my painting. The first couple of days when I painted the bubbles I just started with the basic outline and large details in the bubbles. Looking at them I was not happy with them. But as days went on and I continue to paint I begin to see each of them coming together. I saw this happen especially with the mountain bubble. It started off with a basic outline of the not correct colors and weird shapes but now really looks how I wanted to look, it is my favorite one so far. This has happened for all of the bubbles so far and I am excited to see how the rest of them turn out. I have been working with Corby and he has been helping me with painting techniques and giving me small critiques on my bubbles. I enjoy working in the studio alone a lot of the time. I get to put on my own music and get in my own space and really focus.  I have found myself getting a little frustrated with the bubbles because the paint takes so long to dry and I can't see them come together as quickly as I would like but I am still enjoying painting.

Day 4: Still waiting for the paint to dry

  Blog 4: 8:00-11:00 2:00-3:00 = 4 hours May 13 Today was another early start to the day. I started the day off by doing some research on colors to use in my painting of the grand canyon and it helped. Then once I did that, I got the paint colors that I wanted and started to mix the reddish-orange color of the rock. I already had a base color down and I was having a hard time visualizing what it would look like when it was done but I added more colors and added the red and orange paint and I saw it start to come together. I worked on painting all of the backgrounds for all of the bubbles and it took me forever to figure out the color I wanted for the background of the Holderness weekend one. The paint has been taking forever to dry so I haven’t been able to do as much work on it as I would like but I have still made a lot of progress.

day 8: The library

  Blog 8: 8:00-12:30 1:00-3:00 May 18 I started my day again early today. After about three hours of work, I went on a walk around campus with one of my friends to get inspiration for adding a couple more orbs. We walked over to the library and decided that I should add the library to my painting. We started on the bottom floor took pictures for inspiration then went into the library and took some pictures and went all the way up to the third floor to take more pictures for inspiration. I found one picture that I took to be a really good representation of the beauty in the library. I started painting it and could see it coming together within that short amount of time.

day 6: The little orbs

  Blog 6: 9:30-12:30 = 3 hours May 15 Today I had a later start to my morning. Since it was Saturday I went in at 9:30 instead of 8:00. I was the only one in the studio and it was nice to have a quiet morning. I begin to paint but as I continued I got more and more annoyed with the process. I didn't know what to add to certain bubbles to make it look more realistic and so I just decided to work on the small bubbles. I added some small bubbles around and throughout the larger bubbles to represent other experiences without actually doing detailed paintings of them. They look more or less like the big orb. I think that they look very similar and add a little bit more detail to the whole painting. Wanted to add some more detail to the ocean bubble so I got a picture of the Roseway and painted the yellow siding designs. once I stepped back from the painting it looked incredible. The detail made a lot of difference to the bubble.
