blog 13: The end

Blog 13: May 25 Today I basically spent the day writing and finishing the last part of my painting. I was writing the final response essay and it was a lot easier than I thought. I basically have been voice typing the whole thing and it has made the process so much easier. All I had to do to finish my painting is paint the edges orang and finish the ski hill bubble. The last bubble has been by far my least favorite because it has been the most rushed. When I got here this morning the paint was still wet. That made turning it into a bubble really hard.

blog 12: A day of bubbles

Blog 12: May 24 Unlike all of the other days, I had an early start to my day, but it was unintentional. Today I got to the studio at 10:00. I spent literally the whole day turning the small orbs into water-looking bubbles. It was literally so hard. Since I had to basically cover the whole bubble with a thin layer of blue paint, I needed to go back and make the colors brighter once I had turned them into bubbles. Since I had to make all of them look about the same, it took me so long. I added so much paint and I think that it really started to look like what I wanted.

End of week 2

This week has been so long. I have enjoyed painting a lot, but it has become quite frustrating at times. This week I have reached 55 hours! After counting up all of my hours and realizing I had made it to 55 I was so happy. I have been working so so hard on this painting and I can really start to see it paying off and having worked for 55 hours seems crazy. I have really started to add detail to each of the bubbles and can really start to see it coming together. I have finished a lot of the bubbles and finally being done with parts of his painting feels like a weight being lifted off my chest. I have finished the mountain orb, the ocean or the dorm life orb, the Costa Rica orb, the Slocomb Windows orb, the orientation orb, the Mike orb, and the library orb. I am having trouble with the ski hill and holding this weekend orbs. The ski hill is very hard because I need it to look like it is coming at you, and I struggle with that. There is so much white because of the trees and the snow on

Day 11: 55 hours

Blog 11: 8:00- 11:00 May 21 Today I didn't work as long as I have been. Since I have completed the 55 hours now I have decided that I want to also enjoy my last few days at Proctor. So rather than spending an entire day in the studio, I want to enjoy being outside on the beautiful campus. Today I worked on turning the finished and dry small orbs into orbs. Corby taught us this technique that would help make the pictures look three-dimensional and like water. So I use this technique to make them look three-dimensional and reflective. I thought that it was working very well on the few that I was able to do. I still have many more of the bubbles to do this on but I needed to wait for them to dry.

Day 10: Holderness Weekend

Blog 10: 8:00- 12:00 1:00-3:00 May 20 Today I worked on some finishing touches to the bubbles. Most of the bubbles are completely done, with the exception of the final coating. Today I mainly words on the Holderness weekend bubble. I wanted to make it seem more like Proctor because previously it had almost looked like a Christmas bubble. The hat and a scarf while they do make us think of Holderness weekend also represent other things. I wanted it to be very clear that it was Holderness weekend. I think that after I added some details, it does now look like we're this weekend. I worked on the ski hill a little bit and put some finishing touches on the library.

Day 9: The Proctor Pond

Blog 9: 8:30-2:00 May 19 Today I started my day off at 8:30.  Today was not as long as most of my days but I still put in hours of work. I have been adding a lot of detail to all aspects of the painting. Over the past two days now I have been working on the pond underneath the orb. I have been working on adding different colors and layering in Reds greens and blues together to get the right texture for the water. After looking at the pond, it has become one of my favorite parts. I added more color to the mountain orb and started to see the oranges pop like they would in a desert. it was a very long day of painting and I got a lot done. Corby taught us how to do something called scumbling and glazing. This technique will help me later on in my painting.

day 8: The library

Blog 8: 8:00-12:30 1:00-3:00 May 18 I started my day again early today. After about three hours of work, I went on a walk around campus with one of my friends to get inspiration for adding a couple more orbs. We walked over to the library and decided that I should add the library to my painting. We started on the bottom floor took pictures for inspiration then went into the library and took some pictures and went all the way up to the third floor to take more pictures for inspiration. I found one picture that I took to be a really good representation of the beauty in the library. I started painting it and could see it coming together within that short amount of time.

Day 7: 35 hours!

Blog 7: 8:00-12:30 1:00-2:30 4:00-5:00 = 7 hours Today I started early again. I made so much progress on my painting today. There was a class first block in the studio this morning so Corby was in the studio teaching. He and I talked about what my game plan for the day should be and we decided that I should work on the dorm door and the Slocomb windows. I am excited about the Slocomb windows so I started with that. I already had the sky background painted so I just needed to do the wooden outlines. I worked for a very long time on getting it just right and was taking extreme caution not to mess up. Then to get the design of a front door to a dorm, I walked over to Ives and took a picture of the front door so that I could use it as inspiration. As I painted, it started to become one of my favorite small orbs. I worked on the maple tapping orb and fixed the bridge in the Costa Rica orb. I noticed that the big orb didn't match the rest of them. The style of the big orb was more cart

End of the week

May 16 This week has been wonderful. So far this year I have taken no art classes so my art outlet has been limited to a lined notebook in the middle of class. Spending this much time in the studio around other people doing similar projects has really helped my creativity flow. I have enjoyed being able to work on my project whenever I want. The freedom that we have been given with senior project has really shown me that I will make time to do things even if sometimes I don't want to. I have still gotten up every morning and gone to breakfast with my friends like usual to get an early start of my day. I start early in the mornings so that I can have time in the afternoon. I really enjoy painting more than I thought I did. Originally I was not very excited about this project as much as I wish I had been because painting is not my strongest talent. I think that I'm making a lot of progress on it and the day I started painting I did so much, I wondered if I would even need 55 hour

day 6: The little orbs

Blog 6: 9:30-12:30 = 3 hours May 15 Today I had a later start to my morning. Since it was Saturday I went in at 9:30 instead of 8:00. I was the only one in the studio and it was nice to have a quiet morning. I begin to paint but as I continued I got more and more annoyed with the process. I didn't know what to add to certain bubbles to make it look more realistic and so I just decided to work on the small bubbles. I added some small bubbles around and throughout the larger bubbles to represent other experiences without actually doing detailed paintings of them. They look more or less like the big orb. I think that they look very similar and add a little bit more detail to the whole painting. Wanted to add some more detail to the ocean bubble so I got a picture of the Roseway and painted the yellow siding designs. once I stepped back from the painting it looked incredible. The detail made a lot of difference to the bubble.

Day 5: It finally dried

Blog 5: 8:00-2:00 = 6 hours May 14 Today I started the day out early like all the others. I started off by painting small details on some of the bubbles. The paint was drying faster so I was able to do more. I worked on the bubble that is the meeting house with a stool and the stick that Mike brings with him to assemblies. I worked on figuring out the depth of the stool and of the stage and the curtain. Then I moved on to working on painting a solid layer of white around the green door that represents dorm life. It didn't take me very long and it started to look better but the paint was wet so I couldn't add any more details. I then began to work on the background of the mountain bubble. I really saw it start to come together as I painted more and more. I added some depth to Ocean and some details to the larger bubble. Overall I think that I had a really productive day.

Day 4: Still waiting for the paint to dry

Blog 4: 8:00-11:00 2:00-3:00 = 4 hours May 13 Today was another early start to the day. I started the day off by doing some research on colors to use in my painting of the grand canyon and it helped. Then once I did that, I got the paint colors that I wanted and started to mix the reddish-orange color of the rock. I already had a base color down and I was having a hard time visualizing what it would look like when it was done but I added more colors and added the red and orange paint and I saw it start to come together. I worked on painting all of the backgrounds for all of the bubbles and it took me forever to figure out the color I wanted for the background of the Holderness weekend one. The paint has been taking forever to dry so I haven’t been able to do as much work on it as I would like but I have still made a lot of progress.

Day 3: Waiting for the paint to dry

Blog 3: 8:00-11:00 3:00-4:00 = 4 hours May 12 Today I started the morning off by painting for a few hours. Since I am using oil paints, it was taking forever to dry so there wasn’t much I could today. I worked on the water orb and tried to make the base look like how I wanted it to. By the time I had finished, it started to look like a water orb. After that, I moved onto the small bubble representing ocean and did the next round of details. I added all of the trees to the Costa Rica bubble and added some other bubbles. Later in the afternoon, I worked on a ton of sketches to try and come up with ideas for the bubble with sports. I came up with some ideas and I think that I will work on them tomorrow.

Day 2: The Bubbles

May 11 Today I started bright and early. I started the morning by stretching my canvas with Corby. It was really hard and I have to say I’m glad that's over. I then did some more sketches and worked on color choices. Once the canvas was done, I started by sketching out each individual design that would go in the bubbles, which took me forever. I did a ton of sketches in my notebook to decide what experiences to paint and I finally made up my mind.  I was really excited to start painting so I set up my paints, chose my brushes, and started mixing the color for the background. It took me a while to get the color perfect but I got it and started painting. I forgot how much I love painting until I started. I made so much progress today. I painted the whole background and a lot of the bigger details in the small bubbles. I am really happy with the work that I did today.

Day 1: The Water Orb

May 10 Day 1      This morning was the first day of senior project, and I have to say that I am already enjoying it. I had a lazy start to my morning but pretty quickly got my sketchbook, pens and pencils, computer, and a snack together in a bag, and went out the door. My favorite spot on campus is right outside the lower door to the library. There are these beautiful stone benches that are surrounded by beautiful trees and flowers and it looks out over the pond toward the rest of the campus. I decided I would start the first day of my project sitting in my favorite spot. I began with making a list of all of the aspects of proctor that I would like to incorporate into my painting. As I made my list, I found it easy to think of all of the things that make up Proctor, but I found it hard to think of ways to show them through a painting.      I thought I would try and do some sketches to figure out how I wanted the main focal point of my painting to look. For my senior project, I am doing
